Renting a car and tent camping is the most economical way to see Europe. Camping vans are more expensive to rent and more expensive to feed.

Consider this -- A car, a tent, basic supplies and you're ready to rumble. Whenever you want a hotel you can afford it. But if you don't have camping gear, you're locked out of the best way to travel.

For comparison, multiply your basic expenses (rail, hotel/motel/hostel, restaurant meals) by the number of travelers -- then compare those costs to the car, the campsites and camp cooked meals divided by the number of travelers.
