Find Your Campsites:
Train camping is totally feasible, it just requires a bit more planning and the Internet can be a great help as a planner.  Using the Internet (before you leave home) you can find campgrounds, see how to get to them from the train stations, consult train schedules and timetables and build an itinerary with some confidence. Keep in mind that if you go prepared to camp you can always get a room as needed, but the majority of the time can be spent in campgrounds.  We look at it this way:

1)  If you're on a strict budget you can plan occasional overnight train trips into your itinerary, and pre-plan to locate campsites close to train stations.  That way you don't need to worry about transportation from the train station to the campground.  Public transportation is generally excellent.
2)  On a looser budget the occasional taxi from the train station to the campground won't kill your budget  (as long as you know approximately how far it is).
3) No matter how much you pre-plan,  things will change -- so realize it'll happen and go with it.  When you have to run south to get out of the rain,  run.  What the heck -- you've got a train pass.

What About A Book?
Traveler's Guide to European Camping is written with drivers in mind, but the authors have done such a great job that the book works really well for train camping, too.  This is a great book for planning your trip, in fact there is so much information we don't take it with us -- too much weight for backpacking.

Investigate Your Train Options:
The array of different tickets now available provides great matches for almost any travel plan.  You can purchase Eurail, Europass, BritRail and Rail 'n Drive here.   The KarmaBum travel planning philosophy is simple -- Less is More.  Stay longer in fewer places . . . this is the essence of good traveling.  Don't forget about our Arrival Cities -- London, Paris, Amsterdam and Frankfurt.  We'll help you  get from the airport to the campsites,  and you can check the train schedules out of town.

What About a Book?

Written for driving but it's great for train camping, too.
